Copyright and Licensing

1. General Provisions

This document defines the legal regime of copyright, licensing conditions and principles of use of the results of intellectual activity published in the scientific journal 'UNAIDS Journal' (hereinafter — the Journal).

The copyright and licensing policy is aimed at ensuring a sustainable model of open access to scientific knowledge, protecting the rights and legitimate interests of authors, as well as observing internationally recognized standards of scientific communication and dissemination of scientific information.

The provisions of this document apply to all materials published in the Journal.

2. Open Access Policy

The Journal implements an Open Access model, providing free and unlimited dissemination of published scientific materials.

Within this model, users are granted the right to:

  1. freely read, download, save and reproduce published articles;
  2. copy, distribute and print materials in any format;
  3. create and distribute links to full texts of publications;
  4. use materials for scientific, educational and other legal purposes.

Access to materials is provided without financial, legal or technical barriers, with the exception of mandatory compliance with the requirements for correct attribution of authorship and publication source.

3. Copyright

Authors publishing their works in the Journal retain exclusive copyright to the corresponding results of intellectual activity.

By submitting a manuscript for consideration and publication, authors grant the Journal the right of first publication of the article.

The fact of publication in the Journal does not limit the author's right to further use, distribute and develop the research results, provided that the provisions of this Policy and the terms of the applicable license are observed.

4. Licensing of Publications

All materials published in the Journal are distributed under the terms of the license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0):https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.

The specified license grants third parties the right to:

  1. copy and distribute materials in any format;
  2. adapt, process and create derivative works;
  3. use materials for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

The realization of these rights is allowed with mandatory fulfillment of the following conditions:

  1. indication of authorship of the original work;
  2. link to the primary source of publication in the Journal;
  3. indication of the applied CC BY 4.0 license.

5. Additional Distribution of Published Works

Authors have the right to enter into additional agreements on non-exclusive distribution of the published version of the article, including but not limited to the following forms:

  1. placement of the publication in institutional, national or thematic repositories;
  2. inclusion of the article in scientific collections, monographs or books;
  3. republication in other editions within the framework of acceptable contractual conditions.

In all cases of additional distribution of the published version of the article, correct indication of the Journal as the primary source of publication should be provided.

6. Self-Archiving and Placement of Materials

The Journal supports and encourages the practice of self-archiving scientific works as an element of open scientific communication

Authors have the right to post their works:

  1. in institutional and thematic repositories;
  2. on personal websites or scientific platforms;
  3. in other open online resources,

before the start of peer review, during peer review and after official publication in the Journal.

When placing the published version of the article, it is recommended to specify a link to the final version posted on the official website of the Journal.

7. Use of Materials by Third Parties

The use of Journal materials by third parties is allowed exclusively within the terms of the CC BY 4.0 license and the current legislation on intellectual property.

The Journal does not set additional restrictions on the use of materials for scientific, educational and other legal purposes, provided that the requirements for attribution are observed.

8. Final Provisions

Submitting a manuscript to the Journal means full and unconditional consent of the author with the provisions of this Copyright and Licensing Policy.

The Journal's editors reserve the right to make changes and update this Policy taking into account the development of international open access standards, scientific publishing practices and changes in intellectual property legislation.
